Have you ever been in the middle of cooking dinner when you realize you have no salad dressing on hand?  I learned from my mother to make a simple salad dressing that uses ingredients you probably always have on hand.  I don't have an actual recipe, so I just eyeball the amount needed of each ingredient.

I take one part sugar, two parts vinegar, and three parts vegetable oil and whisk together in a bowl or shake in a glass shaker like shown here.  Then I add a generous amount of ketchup to make it a fairly thick dressing.  Shake well and serve on tossed salad greens.  It's so simple but tastes so tangy.  Now you don't need to panic the next time you find yourself with no salad dressing on hand.  It works in a pinch!
